Q – What are valves?

Ans – Valves are mechanical devices that use to control, regulate or direct flow within a system or process.

Q – What are the functions of valve?

Valves provide several functions, including:

    • Starting or stopping flow based on the valve state
    • Regulating flow and pressure within a piping system
    • Controlling the direction of flow within a piping system
    • Throttling flow rates within a piping system
    • Improving safety through relieving pressure or vacuum in a piping system

Q – Explain the working principle of a gate valve.

Ans – A gate valve controls flow by raising or lowering a gate (a wedge or parallel disc) to either block or allow flow through the valve.

Q – What is the difference between a ball valve and a gate valve?

Ans – A ball valve uses a rotating ball to control flow, while a gate valve uses a rising or falling gate to block or allow flow.

Q – How does a globe valve differ from a gate valve?

Ans- There are following differences between globe valve and gate valve.

    • Gate valve is a multi-directional valve which means the flow can go both ways
    • It has a vertical gate which determines the volume of flow passing through it
    • They are designed as an on-off function and can be used as an isolation valve and flow can be restricted or stopped completely by winding the hand wheel at different levels.
    • The globe valve is a directional valve i.e. one direction of flow and indicated by the arrow.
    • It consists of a movable disc type plug that closes against the horizontal seat to regulate the flow passing through.
    • Due to the horizontal seat configuration the globe valve restricts the fluid flow significantly even when in a fully open position in comparison to the gate valve.

Q – What are the advantages of using a butterfly valve?
Ans – Butterfly valves offer low pressure drop, quick operation, compact design, and are suitable for large flow applications.

Q – Explain the function of a check valve.

Ans – A check valve allows flow in one direction and prevents backflow in the opposite direction, ensuring flow only goes in the desired direction.

    • Body, Bonnet, Yoke etc. are not considered as trim.

Q – Explain the function of an actuator in valve operation.

Ans – An actuator is a mechanical or pneumatic device that controls the movement of the valve, either opening, closing, or modulating flow, based on signals received.
